Strands

Many of the processes I use relate to traditional fiber techniques, reminiscent of ancient repetitive work necessary for home and life.  In this work, Strands references weaving, felting, and the wrapping of skeins of yarn into balls in preparation for knitting, crocheting or weaving.  The materials used in Strands (wool, cotton and soap) allude to the materials used by women throughout time.  The forms are purposely organic and cocoon-like.

The nature of this new exhibition space invited me to play with the notion of inside and outside.  It also presented a new and exciting challenge – that of working small.  It allowed me to experiment with new processes and materials that are consistent with my previous work, yet appropriate for the size of the space.
